Peace Corps- Kyrgyzstan 101
Hey Everyone,
I’m kinda taking a step back here, and I apologize for not writing this info. earlier. After chatting with many of you and getting a lot of basic PC and Kyrgyzstan questions, I realized I didn’t do a great job outlining the who, what, where, when, why’s of my service. So for your ease, information and entertainment, I will fill you in on some of these details. For my sanity and yours, I am going to do so in segments (so keep checking in this week).
1) Who? Obviously…I’m going to serve in Kyrgyzstan for 27 months (beginning March 26th). The Peace Corps is a government organization that is non-religious and non-political. There are some cool benefits for serving: loan deferment, graduate study aid/program abilities, plus all the cultural and career experience (which I kinda signed on for).
The Peace Corps’ mission has three main goals:
- Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
- Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
- Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
You can check out more on their website if you are curious about their history etc. The main things to know are that: the PC is invited into the countries they serve, they train us, and cultural exchange is important for everyone involved. The process to get in is competitive, so I’m pumped they are letting me go
I have been able to connect to a facebook group specifically for the volunteers going over the same time as me (K18). We are beginning to introduce ourselves to each other, swap shopping/packing tips, and collectively freak-out and encourage each other. Veteran volunteers also chime in. (They are getting ready four our Pre-Service Training right now)
That’s all I’m gonna post on PC right now. You can check out some of my links on the side bar for other info. Tomorrow , I’ll cover WHAT my job will be. On an aside…I’m including a cool picture from some frost we got the other day…I know those of you in the South got slammed with some snow, so you won’t really be wowed but here it is….
